Joline Stewart has a Master’s Degree in Music Education (MME). She worked on developing this method for 16 years with the desire to provide a better option for music education.
What is it?
PlayMusic is an online music education program that teaches you how to read and play music. Students learn rhythms, notes, scales, chords and 100 songs in year one. Students are able to begin playing music on day one and they keep playing at a graduated level that allows them to play songs each day rather than practice. Two years of PlayMusic are equivalent to two years of private piano lessons at a fraction of the cost.
Why Does it Work?
PlayMusic separates the major principles of music rhythm, pitch, chords, harmony and melody in the music education process. Students learn one musical concept at a time. Playing a xylophone is easier for young students whose fine motor skills are still developing. Little time is spent learning the instrument.
Is my Child Ready for PlayMusic?
Six-Seven-year-olds: Repeat Lessons or Songs sections.
PlayMusic provides 100 songs to play. Naturally not all children love the same songs. If a child loves one song, let them play it repeatedly. Play all the songs but don’t insist on mastering every song. Take the full 12 months to complete the course. The secret is to play every day or five days a week.
Eight-Nine-year-olds: Play the course as it is written.
PlayMusic is most effective when students play at a level where they can play every day rather than practice every day. Each child is different. When the course gets hard, a child can return to previous lessons and repeat them. Don’t hurry through. Let music be an enjoyable break in the day.
Ten-Eleven-year-olds: Play the Lesson and skip some videos.
Book 1 might be easy for the older student. Move through quickly by skipping the Songs 1, Songs 2 and Songs 3 videos. Play the Lesson and Songs #4. Books 2-3 should be played completely. If they are still easy, skip Songs #4 which is a repeat of Songs 1-3. The beginning Lessons of Book 4 are simpler again and may be moved through more quickly. If so skip Songs #4 of each lesson. Songs are longer and more difficult by the middle of Book 4. Playing all videos is recommended.

No one can guarantee that all will succeed. We can say that PlayMusic provides a learning opportunity like no other available at this time. If a student plays through the entire course, they will have gained the ability to read and play music on the treble staff. Reading bass staff and advanced rhythms come in subsequent courses.
